Android Behaviour Inconsistencies

On android, to open up the main menu list, you need to tap the hamburger (cannot swipe across to open). But then to close the menu, you cannot tap the open space, but must swipe across? What is the reason for this inconsistency?

Please fix this. This is just poor app design...
